So when don’t you need consent?
If you’re swapping out old for new – think new cabinets, appliances, or fixtures in the same spots – you’re usually good to go. No forms, no extra council costs.
But here’s where consent might be required:
- You’re adding a new sink, toilet, or shower where there wasn’t one before
- You’re installing a tiled wet-area shower (not a shower box)
- You’re moving walls or touching anything that could affect the structure
- Your renovation could change fire safety or exits in a multi-unit building
