Can I live in the house while the renovation is happening?

If you’re wondering whether you’ll need to pack up and relocate during your renovation, the short answer is: maybe. It all depends on what kind of work is being done and how much disruption you’re willing to tolerate.

When living in works

We’ve had numerous clients in Christchurch who have stayed put during renovations. If the work is confined to one area, or we can safely separate the work zone from your living space, it can be manageable. For example, if it’s a bathroom renovation and you have a second toilet or shower available, you’ll probably be fine.

When moving out makes more sense

If the job involves knocking down internal walls, rewiring the house, or removing the kitchen sink, staying on-site might be more trouble than it’s worth. Safety is our priority – and if the house is going to be without power, water, or access to essentials for an extended period, you’re better off crashing elsewhere.

We’ll talk about it at quoting time

This is something we always cover during the quoting process. We’ll be upfront about how the renovation is likely to impact your day-to-day life. If living on-site is feasible, we’ll discuss how we can make it work. If not, we’ll help you understand your options and give you enough notice to make a plan.

Tip:

If you do choose to stay home, it helps to have a good sense of humour and an appreciation for takeaways. Renovation dust has a way of getting into everything.
