If you’re planning a renovation in Christchurch, one of the first things that might pop into your head (right after “How much will it cost?” and “Where will I make my morning coffee?”) is whether you’ll need council consents or building approvals – and who’s going to sort that out.
Do you need council consents for a renovation?
Not always. If you’re painting a wall or swapping out a tap, you’ll probably be fine. But as soon as you start doing structural work, moving plumbing, or changing the layout, it’s time to talk to the council. That’s where consents and approvals may come in.
Who usually handles the paperwork?
Here’s the good news: if you’ve got a designer or architect on board, they’ll typically take care of this as part of their service. They’ll draw up the plans, submit them to the council, and address any questions or requests for changes from the council. It’s their wheelhouse, and they know how to speak “council-ese.”
What if I don’t have a designer?
If you’re not working with a designer or if the project is relatively straightforward, we can certainly assist with council consents and approvals.
So who should do what?
- If you’re already working with a designer or architect, they’ll usually handle it.
- If you’re not, and the job needs council approval, we can help you with that.
- If it’s a small job, chances are no consents needed, but we’ll let you know for sure.
We’ll keep it simple
One way or another, you won’t be left dealing with council forms on your own. Whether we handle it directly or point you to a trusted designer who can, you’ll have the proper support. We’ll let you know upfront if consents are needed, and how that might affect your schedule.
That way, you can get back to planning your new bathroom tiles or kitchen splashback, and leave the paperwork to us (or someone equally capable).
